Saint Paul Wednesday Food Truck Scene

Saint Paul Wednesday Food Truck Scene

This summer, Saint Paul, MN invited several food trucks to park at Kellogg Blvd. and Wabasha St. on Wednesday’s at lunchtime.  We walked down there to see what it was all about.  I’ve been a big fan of the concept of food trucks and street vendors for a long time.  It’s nice to see them gaining a real following in the Twin Cities.  Food trucks and push carts lower the barrier of entry into the restaurant scene and provide an additional revenue stream for existing restaurants.  Plus, there’s nothing like eating something on a bun while standing on the sidewalk in the city — especially when you are joined by a few hundred other folks with the same idea.

There were 6 vendors lined up on Kellogg Blvd at about noon.  Here’s today’s roster:

Fork in the Road — Classic American lunch options like salad, subs, and brats. What makes them special?  Fresh Pineapple Snowcones!

Magic Bus Cafe — Mainly serves hotdogs.  There are several variations available.  What sets them apart?  Seating for 8 inside the bus!

5 Things to Look For in a Grill Brush

Arlo & Janis - Dirty Grill

A clean grill is a happy grill.  It prevents sticking and make the experience more enjoyable.  Here are a few tips for choosing a grill brush.

1.  Choose a model with a long, sturdy handle.

2.  Make sure your grill brush has a hole or strap to be able to hang it up.

3.  2 sides are better than one.  One side of your grill brush should have either brass or stainless steel bristles for cleaning in and around the cooking grate.  The other side should have more of a scrub pad.  This is used to “buff” the grate clean to prevent sticking.

4.  A metal scraper on the end of the brush helps remove stubborn, burned on crud.

5.  Skip the motorized grill brushes.  They don’t save any time and hardly any energy.

Here’s the grill brush I use and recommend — Mr. Bar-B-Q Oversized Dual Grill BrushGrill Brushes)

There are many different models available.  Pick them up, make sure they feel good in your hand, and look for these features.  Your grill will thank you!

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

This morning, I decided to do something that I never do. I got a cup of coffee and sat out on my front step. I just sat there and listened and watched. There were dozens of birds singing and a few squirrels scheming.  And, for a few seconds, a squirrel on the porch railing next door yelling at me.  I’m not sure how I feel about that.  I was just minding my own business.  I may have to make a peace offering later.

There’s not a lot of human activity in my neighborhood on Saturday mornings, I guess that’s probably true in most places.  That’s probably a good thing.  People are resting and recovering from a week of work (and hopefully some play).  It also gives me an opportunity to commune with nature in the middle of a city.

Some of our flowers are in bloom.  It looks like they took advantage of our long, cool spring and are very happy.  Many of our plants are bigger and have more flowers than ever before.

Our hydrangea bushes are just starting to form buds that will blossom all summer.  It might be my favorite plant.  Our boxwoods made it through the winter with very little winter burn.  We had good snow cover all winter long so that protected the leaves.  Last summer we lost one boxwood plant and had severe burn on the others so it’s good to see them healthy this year.

Our chive plants are monsters this year.  We have more chives than we know what to do with, so we let these couple of plants go into bloom before we cut them back to the ground.  They have very distinctive blossoms that look kind of like a exploding fireworks.

Speaking of blossoms that look like fireworks, check out our Mountain Bluet.  It is going nuts this year!

Every region has some culinary specialty that they are known for.  In the Twin Cities, it’s the Juicy Lucy (or Jucy Lucy).  It’s two beef patties with cheese in between and then the edges are pressed together before cooking.  This … Continue reading
