Wow, what a busy week.  I can’t remember if there has been a week where my first post came on a Friday.  Way behind…  Anyway, here’s a short update on what’s been going on in our kingdom.

  • We started out the week by getting the second half of our windows replaced.  The first half were replaced 3 years ago, so it’s been a long time coming.  The results are fantastic and worth every hard-earned penny.  (If you’re in the Twin Cities and need to have windows, siding, roofing, or deck work done, contact Timberland Exteriors.  We’ve used them twice and they went above the call of duty both times.)
  • I played softball two nights this week, both in torrential downpours.  Tuesday night’s rain drops were the biggest I’ve ever seen.  Each drop left a crater on the infield dirt almost an inch in diameter.  Very strange.
  • I mentioned, in a post last week, that I was looking forward to receiving my copy of The Homemade Pantry.  Well, it arrived and I paged through it.  There are lots of possibilities in this book.  I already made my first batch of vanilla ice cream from the book.  Turned out pretty good!

  • I’ve been testing a new BBQ product lately and it passed the test.  Pretty soon, it will be available in the BackyardLifeBlog.com Shop, but until then, hush hush.
  • In my last Current Hard Work update, I stated my new sales goal was to hit $1500 in a rolling 60-day period.  I have news… I blew past it and crossed over the $2000 mark.  Sweet!

Once last thing… A major component of my Current Hard Work list, participating in Let’s Blog Off, is coming to an end.  The guys who started Let’s Blog Off, in 2010, have decided that it’s time to move on to greener pastures, so this Tuesday’s edition will be the last.  I haven’t decided if I’m going to add my two cents there yet, but it has been fun and a learning experience for me to have participated over the past 7 months.

New Book — The Homemade Pantry

Warning: Use of undefined constant title - assumed 'title' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/backyard/public_html/wp-content/plugins/contextual-related-posts/contextual-related-posts.php on line 82

I was perusing the Taste section of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune this morning when I came across this interview with Alana Chernila of Eating From The Ground Up.

She has just released her first book, The Homemade Pantry.  This book really struck a chord with me.  I’m a moderately frugal guy, so I know that most of the time, it is cheaper to make things from scratch than to buy them in the store, but that’s not what hooked me.

I also know that most of the time, I can make something at home that tastes better and is healthier than what is on the shelf of the grocery store or on the menu of the local greasy spoon.  This book has recipes (along with stories) for 101 foods to make at home rather than buying at the store.  Some that sound interesting to me are mozzarella cheese, instant oatmeal, “Pop Tarts”, various breads and crackers, ketchup, and mustard.

I can’t wait for my copy to be delivered, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to spread the word about this new book.  I paged through it at the store and there’s not much in there that I wouldn’t consider making.

Some of the recipes in there would be perfect for camping trips like pancake mix and the instant oatmeal.  It also teaches how to make jerky, hummus, peanut butter, and granola, which keep you energized while on a hike or paddling a kayak.

What’s amazing is how many items are readily available at the grocery store that nobody makes at home anymore.  The best example I can think of is crackers.  People eat crackers all the time, but when was the last time you ate one that was home made?  I’m guessing never.

Let’s change that.  Give The Homemade Pantry a try and see if there are even a few things that you can make at home rather than buy to save some cash and be healthier as well.

The Edge of the World – Let’s Blog Off

Warning: Use of undefined constant title - assumed 'title' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/backyard/public_html/wp-content/plugins/contextual-related-posts/contextual-related-posts.php on line 82

This weeks Let’s Blog Off topic is “The Edge of the World.”  We all have places of comfort and familiarity.  We also have a vast world that we don’t know and don’t understand.

It can be scary to push the boundaries of our comfort zones, but it’s necessary to grow.  Not everyone is interested in growth, but I am.  Michael and Claudia Good at Rise365.com are doing an interesting experiment in pushing outward.  The I Don’t Care Project aims to have people intentionally put themselves in situations where they normally would care about what others might think and follow through anyway.

When I was younger, I played a bit of Warcraft on the computer and I think it illustrates my point quite well.  When you start a new level on Warcraft, there is a map that is almost completely black.  You don’t know what’s around you.  You don’t know what danger is lurking out there.  You don’t know what treasure is out there to be had.  You don’t know.

As you continue on, as you expand your horizons, the world become clearer.  You define the enemy.  You define your assets.  You can put together a plan.

The edge of the world that I’m going to push is one that has eluded me for a couple of decades.  From the time I was a child, my family often visited Duluth, MN as a sort of getaway.  We usually visited for a day or the weekend.  We played in Canal Park, watched the ore boats come and go, watched the Aerial Lift Bridge raise and lower.  We took a train ride once.  All very cool.

We usually took pictures of the lighthouses guarding the canal.  Often, we’d continue up the North Shore of Lake Superior to Two Harbors and on to Split Rock Lighthouse.  There is a lighthouse I’ve never been to.  It’s only a few miles from the lighthouses at the canal, but I’ve never seen it with my own eyes.

The Minnesota Point Lighthouse only operated for a couple of decades in the 1800’s before being decommissioned, but it is of historic importance for a couple of reasons.  It was the first lighthouse built in Minnesota.  Interesting, but not much more than trivia.

The other reason is why the ruins of this lighthouse still exist. In 1823, H.W. Bayfield of the British Royal Navy was assigned the duty of surveying Lake Superior.  He designated a spot on Minnesota Point as “Zero Point” — the spot from which all other reference points come from.  The tower designates “Zero Point.”  All surveys of Lake Superior from that point forward use the tower of the Minnesota Point Lighthouse as the official starting point.

Because of this, the federal government wouldn’t allow the tower to be torn down completely.  In 1975, the ruins were placed on the National Historic Register, protecting them from demolition.  If not for the fact that the lighthouse marked that important point, the tower would have been torn down in the 1800’s, like the keeper’s house was.

Reaching the lighthouse requires a 2ish mile walk on a sandy trail each way.  That’s a long walk in sand.  I’m a little nervous about being able to go all the way.

In less than 2 weeks, I’ll be in Duluth for a wedding.  I’ll have about 6 hours to kill before the ceremony.  I’m going to move the edge of my world out just a little bit and finally cross this place off my list.

Vintage Camping — 1970’s VW Beetle Camper

Check out this classic Volkswagen Beetle camping trailer!  I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it, but it looks like it worked OK.

I’ve never seen a car with the hitch on the roof or able to turn around completely while still hitched to the trailer.

What’s the most unique camper you’ve ever seen? This is near the top of my list.

What’s your “And Then What?”

Warning: Use of undefined constant title - assumed 'title' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP) in /home/backyard/public_html/wp-content/plugins/contextual-related-posts/contextual-related-posts.php on line 82

We all have moments in our lives when we know things will never be the same again.  When life has made a fundamental change.  I can think of several moments.  The most profound was the passing of our daughter, but it could be as simple as reading a book.

Life is in a constant state movement.  It doesn’t stand still.  You may be moving forward.  You may be moving backward, but life is always moving.

When I look back, I can see several small decisions that led me to where I am.  Some of them, in hindsight, were terrible decisions.  Some of them, in the moment, seemed risky but turned out to be correct.

The sum of all the decisions I’ve made put me exactly where I am.  A business consultant friend of mine says “Every organization is perfectly designed to get the results that it gets.”  You are an organization.  Your family is an organization.  Your workplace is an organization.  Your friends are an organization.

The way you conduct your life has gotten you the life you have.  Right now, you have an opportunity to make a decision to change your path or continue on as you have been.  That choice is up to you but I challenge you to define your “And then what?”

When you get to the next stop on your journey, then what?  Where do you go next?  Living day to day leaves too much to chance.  Think a few steps ahead.  Go toward that.  When you get there, then what?  The choice is yours.  Be sure you make one.
