Smoked French Onion Soup

There’s something incredibly comforting about Baked French Onion Soup.  Who am I kidding?  It’s probably the broiled cheese and crouton together with a rich broth.  I thought I’d try something a little different.  How about Smoked French Onion Soup? This … Continue reading

Conservation of Energy

Life is full of paradoxes.  I find that I am constantly trying to conserve energy.  You never know when you’re going to need it, right?  I tell myself that I can’t do whatever current thing there is to do because then I might be to tired to do something else later.  When it comes time to do that something else, I tell myself I had better not because I’ll be too tired to do the next thing.

sleepy

What we forget is that our bodies are constantly producing energy.  We eat several times a day in order to provide fuel, but often don’t do much other than exist between meals.  Herein lies the problem.

If we are constantly producing energy and rarely use it, it gets stored.  That’s fine.  It’s quite handy if you’re ever stranded in the middle of nowhere for a week or two.  If we are consistently storing energy, in the form of fat, and never busting into those stores we just keep getting bigger, not better.

That was the physical issue.  Now on to the spiritual issue.  If we are constantly producing energy but never expelling it in proportionate amounts, we stagnate.  We stop growing.  There is only so much consumption we can do before our output drops to almost nothing.

Produce something.  Be creative.  Be exhausted.  Instead of thinking about how you can conserve energy, think about how you can get rid of as much as possible.  What can you do today to serve as many people as you can in the best way you can?  The answer to this question is the answer to a lot of questions.  What should you do with your life?  Serve as many people as you can in the best way you can.  What is your calling?  To serve as many people as you can in the best way you can.  How can you be fulfilled?  Serve as many people as you can in the best way you can.

The paradox here is that the more energy you spend serving people as best you can, the more energy gets produced.  You’ll feel more alive because you are more alive.  You’ll go to bed exhausted and wake up full of energy to do it again!

Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013!

2012 has been a year of growth. This blog has grown. The business behind BackyardLifBlog.com has grown. Our family is growing — Liz’s belly quite literally is growing. :)

The list of people I call friends has grown. My skill set has grown. My confidence has grown. The list goes on and on. The best part is that 2013 is going to be a year if even greater growth!

When our little Timothy finally arrives, I’ll have a whole new set of circumstances to master and a new person to grow. There will definitely be challenges, but I’m up for it.

I’m also excited about some new business projects on the docket for 2013. I’m still in the planning phase for some while others are just bullet points on a list right now, so I’ll keep the details quiet. I hope to have the first launched in February [fingers crossed].

Now, here’s a look back at the most viewed posts on BackyardLifeBlog.com during 2012. Did you miss any of them? Subscribe and you won’t miss any more!

  1. Willow River State Park Review
  2. Puff Pastry and Mission Cherry Jam Turnovers

Believe it or not, the third most viewed page on BackyardLifeBlog.com in 2012 was the Shop page for the Stufz Ultimate Stuffed Burger System — Right behind the home page and Willow River State Park Review.  To those of you who have purchased a Stufz burger stuffer or Meat Rakes or anything else from the BackyardLifeBlog.com Shop — THANK YOU!  You help keep this blog running and help support my family.  It brings me great joy to help spread the fun that is outdoor cooking.

Let’s see what we can do to make 2013 the best year yet!

Lindsey Stirling: What Child Is This

Merry Christmas everyone!  I hope you’re having a great holiday!

I “discovered” Lindsey Stirling last week when YouTube released their YouTube Rewind 2012  top 10 videos of the year and her song “Crystallize” was on the list at number 8.  I’m a sucker for modern violin music so i piqued my interest.  (Little known fact:  The Corrs are one of my all-time favorite groups.)

I listened to several of her songs on YouTube, before buying her album on iTunes.  It’s awesome and you should check it out.

Sometimes life gets busy and we forget to do things.  This recipe is from the summer but it is a good analog for throwing it all together and moving on.  Seriously, I meant to post this in August-ish but I … Continue reading
