I just took a month long vacation!

Ok, maybe that’s a stretch but I strategically took days off of work to make it feel like a month long vacation.  Of the 31 days between June 24th and July 24th, I only worked 15 days.  That means I was not at work for more than half the month.

In the last month, I’ve made 2 trips to visit family in Southeastern Wisconsin (8 days), went camping at Willow River State Park (3 days), took a day trip along the Saint Croix and Mississippi rivers in Southeastern Minnesota and Southwestern Wisconsin to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary, and had a couple of other miscellaneous days off.

In a couple of ways, I preferred to have taken a few smaller trips over taking a week off all at once.  We got to go in a few different directions and have experiences in several different communities.  If we would have gone to one place, chances are pretty good that we would have run out of interesting things to do before our time was up.

I’m not saying I won’t go on longer trips again.  As a matter of fact, I’d like to take a week off of work sometime in the fall to do some more exploring.

What can you do to extend your time off?  Can you shorten your workweek?  Be a tourist in your own town?  Maybe all it takes is to go for a walk instead of sitting inside watching TV.

You have 168 hours in a week.  You can choose how you spend them.  Be strategic about how you use your discretionary time you’ll wind up feeling more satisfied with your life!

The Stockholm Pie Company is located on the corner of Spring Street and WI Highway 35 in the tiny village of Stockholm, WI, Population 82 or 97 depending on which sign you read.  What makes it special is that everything is made from scratch.

Stockholm Pie Company

The Stockholm Pie Company offers several different varieties of pies and several flavors in each category.  The serve fruit and nut pies, cream pies, some seasonal offerings, and also savory pies, pot pies, and quiches.

It is a tiny, narrow storefront in the old General Store building, originally across the street from it’s present location.  There’s room for maybe a dozen people inside.  You walk up to the counter and choose your pie from the chalkboard on the wall.  There is a counter inside where you can sit and enjoy your pie.  We chose to sit outside at a table a chairs on the front porch.  It is the perfect perch to watch life go by.  We saw dozens of bikers and bicyclists on their way down the Great River Road.

There are so many pies to choose from, it is difficult to not order a slice of everything.  We tried a fruit pie and a cream pie to get a good sample.  I wanted to order a Sausage/Apple/Cheddar Cheese savory pie, but didn’t think I’d have room.

Triple Berry Pie

The triple berry pie is make with a blend of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries.  The crust is tender and flaky and makes a really nice counterpoint to the tartness of the filling. The slices are a generous size and you can always get it ala mode.

Peanut Butter Fudge Cream Pie from Stockholm Pie Company, Stockholm, WI

Peanut Butter Fudge Cream Pie

The peanut butter fudge pie was think and creamy with a layer of fudge on the bottom and peanut butter cream on top.  It is drizzled with fudge sauce and chopped peanuts.  This thing is RICH — perfect to split for dessert.  I had a nice hot cup of coffee and Liz had a glass of milk.  We were both delighted at how good it all tasted.

They take special orders and you can buy frozen pies to take home and bake.  They will also ship 2 of their most polular pies — Apple Crisp and Caramel Apple Crunch.

Would we go back?  Honestly, I kinda wish i was there now eating another piece of pie and watching the world go by.  It takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get there from Saint Paul, but take your time and stop a the many overlooks and the couple of small towns along the way.  It is a great way to spend the day.
