I published this itinerary on Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend, 2011.  We were pretty successful in our pursuits.  Here’s how we did:

As a final hurrah to the Summer (hopefully the weather holds out a few more weeks), We are heading to Bayfield, WI to spend the weekend.  Here’s what we plan on doing:

  1. Drive on backroads the whole way to see what the small towns of the Wisconsin woods have to offer.
  2. Stop in Hayward and eat at the original Famous Dave’s BBQ.  (Practically a pilgrimage, if you ask me.)
  3. Seek out a giant muskie.
  4. Catch a Lake Superior sunrise
  5. Watch the boats come and go from the harbor.
  6. Comb the shores for sea glass.
  7. Eat good food.
  8. Hang out with the locals.
  9. RELAX!

  6. Comb the shores for sea glass.
We picked up a handful of sea glass to add to the collection.  We only spent about 20 minutes searching for it, so we did pretty good.
  7. Eat good food. [DISCLOSURE:  This was the best beef brisket sandwich I’ve ever had.  It was a special on the menu that day and I have no idea where they got it or where they cooked it, but it was perfect.]

  8. Hang out with the locals.
We hung out in town and on the Bayfield City Dock for most of the weekend.  This was our first time there in September.  It’s amazing what a difference it was compared to being there during the summer tourist season.  The town was still busy, but there were far fewer people and it was quieter.
  9. RELAX!

BackyardLifeBlog.com playlist on Spotify

I recently started using Spotify.com to provide background tunes to my life.  Spotify allows you to stream music to your computer for free.  It’s a notch above Pandora Radio in that you can choose which songs you want to listen to and when.  You can also create your own playlists — either public or private.

I created the BackyardLifeBlog.com playlist on Spotify.  You can listen to it here.  The playlist is currently a little “country-heavy” but it is easy to listen to.

What songs would you like added to it? List them in the comments section below and I’ll see if I can get them in there.

Last Day of the Minnesota State Fair and New YouTube Channel

In Minnesota, where we have short summers, we like to take advantage of every opportunity to soak up some sun and get outside and play.  This culminates with the “Great Minnesota Get-together” — the State Fair.  It is one of the largest and, in my opinion, best in the nation.

As a way to celebrate the traditional end of the Summer and the last day of the Minnesota State Fair, I recorded this video with my new Kodak Zi10 HD video camera.

I have also started a new YouTube Channel for the BackyardLifeBlog.com.  You can access it at http://www.youtube.com/user/BackyardLifeBlog?feature=mhee.  I hope to share videos of my experiences around town and around the country.  There may also be a video blog thrown in here or there.  Please feel free to subscribe to the channel to keep up to date on the happenings around here. Also, consider subscribing to the RSS feed to have new articles emailed to you when they are released.
