A great man left us yesterday

We lost a great man yesterday.  Donald E. Tewes was a success by any measure and a fabulous person to boot.  He practiced law in Merrill, WI before World War II.  Don, Liz’s maternal grandfather passed away yesterday, just a few weeks after turning 96.

After the war broke out, Don joined the war effort as a member of the Flying Tigers in Burma to protect China from Japanese invasion.

Discharged in 1946, Don with his wife Myra, knew they wanted to build an enterprise — Tewes Plastics was born.  That company still exists today — 66 years later.

In 1957, Don made a successful run for a seat in the US House of Representatives, serving Wisconsin’s 2nd District and served 1 term.

I met Don in 1996, a while after Liz and I started dating.  I feel privileged to have known him as long as I have, but I’m also sad that I never got to meet Myra.  She passed away a few years earlier.  I knew Don was a special guy when he commented to Liz that he liked my shoes and then proceeded to go out and buy a pair for himself.  I don’t know what he liked about them — maybe their red, white, and blue color scheme. Picture this:  I was firmly rooted in my teens and an 80 year old man bought my shoes because he thought they were cool.

I always enjoyed chatting with him at holiday gatherings and when we were visiting.  We made a bit of a tradition of stopping at the office to chat either when we got into town or on our way back home.

Curiosity was a prominent characteristic.  Always asking questions.  Playing with things to see how they work.  It probably goes back to his childhood in Merrill.

There’s so much more to say, but it doesn’t matter anymore.  Don is back with his beloved wife today.

Grandpa Don, thanks for everything!  We’re gonna miss you!

If you’ve been following this blog for any significant length of time, then you know the main reason this blog exists is because of the realization that life is too short and too fragile to wander along randomly.

When our first daughter didn’t make it to term, I knew that I needed to make a change.  This blog is the record of that change.

Well, something wonderful has happened.  We are expecting another child.  We still have a long way to go before we meet this little one and we hope the entire pregnancy goes without a hitch.

We welcome your thoughts and prayers for this new life to have a chance to experience this world.  You can look forward to occasional updates on how things are progressing.  One day, in late April or early May, we hope to bring a new bundle of joy home, something we weren’t able to do with Samantha.

Hodag Hunting in Rhinelander, WI

Hodags are mythical creatures said to inhabit the woods around Rhinelander, WI. While vacationing there, we did some hunting. Here’s what we found!

There is a Historical Marker sign about Hodags in a local park. This is what it says:

This mythical creature is the official symbol of Rhinelander. It was created in 1896 by “Gene” Shepard, Rhinelander pioneer timber cruiser and famous prankster. Shepard claimed to have discovered the animal in the woods near Rice Creek. He “captured” it by blocking the mouth of its den with rocks and rendering it unconscious with a chloroformed sponge on a long pole. Actually fashioned by a skilled woodcarver named Luke Kearney, the original Hodag was seven feet long and thirty inches high, black and hairy, with two horns on its head, twelve horns along its spine, and short powerful legs armed with long claws. For years, Shepard exhibited the Hodag at county fairs in a dimly lighted tent, controlling its movements with wires. Many spectators believed the animal was real. Shepard would assure them that he had captured it in “Section 37″ and that it ate “nothing but white bulldogs and those only on Sundays.”
